Crane Canyon Cellars
1999 "North Coast" White Crane
Crane Canyon Cellars White Crane is a unique blend of 50%
Viognier from Anderson Valley and 50% Gewürztraminer from the Chalk Hill
appellation. The White Crane combines the fruity perfumed character of
Viognier with the unmistakable spice of Gewürztraminer. Both grapes were
harvested at optimal maturity, fermented slowly in stainless steel, and
inhibited from going through malo-lactic fermentation. Both wines were
fermented dry so there is no residual sugar, in the style of French
Alsatian wines. This is a designer wine, created to pair with foods from
pasta, to your favorite fish, to spicy Asian cuisine.
Winemakers' Notes
Our first White Crane was created because we had about 7
gallons of Viognier and 7 gallons of Gewürztraminer left over after our final
blends. So, we took a chance and mixed them together. To our great satisfaction
it created a real crowd pleaser. So in 1998 we made a little larger amount and
increased that in 1999. Honeysuckle, pineapple and spice combined with a supple
mouthfeel yet a fresh acidity that creates a long, lingering finish. Not a wine
you need to ponder, just open and enjoy.
