Crane Canyon Cellars
1999 Mourvèdre
Noble Vineyard - Knights Valley
Crane
Canyon Cellars Noble Vineyard is our first vineyard designated Mourvèdre.
The Noble Vineyard is a pastoral setting in the foothills of
Knights Valley, Sonoma County, California. Dr. Noble’s passion for Rhône
wines inspired him to plant this vineyard in Mourvèdre, Syrah and
Viognier. Crane Canyon made its debut from this vineyard with its 1994
Mourvèdre. We feel its microclimate is perfect for Mourvèdre and Syrah,
with moderately steep hillside drainage and exposure, and cooler than
adjacent Napa and Alexander Valleys, allowing for longer maturation and
deep complexity of flavors.
The 1999 Mourvèdre is blended with 10% Syrah from the same
vineyard.
Winemakers' Notes
This medium-bodied red wine displays a remarkable complexity
for its youth. The bouquet leaps from the glass with blueberry, raspberry, and
black cherry, accented by leather, chocolate, and pipe tobacco. Rhone varietals
typically exhibit a sensual animal character described by the French as "sauvage",
and this wine is no exception. The flavors of roast game, sunburnt earth,
lavender, and sage spin around a dense fruit core of blueberry and black cherry.
These are focused by good acidity and soft tannins, giving it good aging
potential. Though drinking beautifully now, patience will reward with dazzling
complexity. Wonderfully approachable now and should develop in the bottle for 6
to 8 years. Think Pablo Neruda, eating grilled lamb crusted with rosemary, while
listening to Miles Davis.
